BNEWS reveals 'The Grey Cardinal' of Peevski: Who controls the secret services of Bulgaria?

At the top of this structure stands the “grey cardinal” Valentin Trifonov - the man who allegedly calls the shots within the security services and reports directly and exclusively to Peevski.

BNEWS publishes a shocking investigation claiming that the entire security and surveillance system of Delyan Peevski, sanctioned under the Magnitsky Act, has been centralised and integrated into a vast network.

At the top of this structure stands the “grey cardinal” Valentin Trifonov - the man who allegedly calls the shots within the security services and reports directly and exclusively to Peevski. According to the investigation, wiretapping software worth hundreds of millions of leva has been purchased and imported, both for Peevski personally and for the State Agency for National Security (DANS). Some of these tools are unlicensed or outright banned in the U.S. and the EU, while others were smuggled in with the mediation of intelligence services from Israel and third countries.

BNEWS claims that Bulgaria ranks among the most heavily surveilled countries in the world today. No prominent politician or oligarch’s communications escape real-time monitoring. Reports and transcripts are allegedly delivered directly to Peevski through his private structure - DATO.

The picture extends even further: alongside state resources, private companies are said to be involved in external surveillance.

According to the investigation, hundreds of agents are engaged in this system to ensure total control over information in the country.
