In an interview with Iliyana Benovska on August 2, 2025, Yordan Mitsikulev – activist and representative of the political movement “Velichie” – made shocking revelations, combining deep personal emotion with serious political and institutional accusations.
Mitsikulev joined the conversation from the Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos, where he had gone to help as a charizanin – a voluntary worker at the holy site, which, in his words, “they still haven’t dared to sell.” From the very first minutes, he set the tone – the spirit of resistance against destruction, corruption, and ruin was evident even in his greetings for Ilinden, a symbol of the struggle and sacrifices for freedom.
The discussion quickly turned to a horrifying scene – the mass and unjustified slaughter of animals in Plovdiv Province, documented and investigated by Mitsikulev and his associates. At the centre of the scheme, he placed Dr. Ivan Shikov – Head of the “Healthcare” Department at the Regional Food Safety Directorate, Plovdiv. According to Mitsikulev, Shikov is the “evil mastermind” behind the deliberate killing of entirely healthy herds. The victims are ordinary people like poor Dancho from Zhelyo Voyvoda, whose livelihood of 80 head of livestock was destroyed. Compensation – none. Tens of thousands of leva were siphoned off, the animals slaughtered and sold, and the family left in misery.
Mitsikulev’s investigation includes video footage of excavators, carcasses, blood, and decaying animals dumped just 500 meters from Plovdiv. No security, no disinfection, but a stench and a threat to public health.
While an “epidemic on paper” was created despite the absence of symptoms. In one farm, only one positive test, yet 90 goats were slaughtered. Samples were taken from dead sheep days after their death. Blank protocols were signed, and police, using pressure and threats, refused to identify themselves. Video evidence proved that the rendering plant had been turned into a graveyard for thousands of carcasses from endangered Bulgarian breeds.
Mitsikulev claims that behind this scheme stands an organised criminal group with influence in the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), the Prosecutor’s Office, and state institutions. The extermination of autochthonous breeds, he says, is done deliberately, repressively, with cover from the state machine. He calls what is happening a “massacre of the gene pool,” accompanied by pressure on farmers, lies, impunity, and sheer madness. He demands the resignation and prosecution of Shikov – and answers.
Mitsikulev also links these actions to the illegitimacy of the authorities. According to him, the National Assembly conducted an illegal selection of members in the commission that determines the leadership of the new Anti-Corruption Commission. Host Benovska recalled that she will sue Parliament under the State and Municipal Responsibility for Damages Act (ZODOV), while Mitsikulev added that he will work to seek accountability. He also exposed figures like Kiril Dobrev, who proposed a person with a conflict of interest, and reminded that his work with Dobrev’s companies led to repression and economic pressure against him. According to him, the government itself is illegitimate, a fact confirmed by a report to the European Commission. He stresses that the crimes will not only be exposed but will lead to future retribution.
In conclusion, Mitsikulev addressed all citizens, including dog and cat lovers: “Sheep are also domestic animals. They have a soul. They need protection!” He emphasised that “it won’t always be this way” and that the signals people send today could form the basis for punishment tomorrow. He calls for accountability – personal, institutional, and judicial – for the destroyed lives, the violated rights, and for turning Bulgaria into a terrorist state.
The conversation between Yordan Mitsikulev and Iliyana Benovska became a direct accusation against the authorities – not only political but also institutional. The slaughter of animals is not only a tragedy for farmers but a symbol of the complete breakdown of statehood, where schemes, unaccountability, and inhumanity replace the rule of law. Mitsikulev insists on fighting to the end – for justice, for the survival of traditions, and for retribution against those who see the people as voiceless cattle.
