Maria Ilieva: Bulgarian citizens have the right to transparency

"Bulgarian citizens are entitled to transparency, not to documents pushed through in the dark.”

Maria Ilieva, an MP from the “Velichie” party, delivered sharp criticism in parliament during the debate on ratifying the letters under the Paris Agreement.

“The document is being presented as a mere technical act to ratify the letters of the Paris Agreement. But there is no clarity on how many NATO personnel will be affected, how much their upkeep will cost, along with their families, how much has been spent since 2017, and whether funds are provided in the budget. We hear talk of reciprocity, but no concrete figures, no comparison with Bulgarian military personnel abroad. The tax exemptions for foreign servicemen are also not mentioned. What exactly are they? What privileges are being granted? There is no information, or it is being concealed. And when data is missing, it begins to smell of mafia and backroom deals,” Ilieva said.

She concluded with the following:

“If anyone can explain these numbers, we would be very grateful. Bulgarian citizens are entitled to transparency, not to documents pushed through in the dark.”
