On May 30, a new website appeared on the Internet - kompasnovini.com, and from day one started publishing articles with suspicious content and unclear origins. Despite presenting itself as a media channel, it does not declare a chief editor, a publisher or even a legal entity that is responsible for the information published on the site, which is against the Bulgarian law.
Under the Radio and Television Act (RTA) and the Compulsory Deposit of Print and Other Works Act, each media outlet is required to indicate who owns it and who is responsible for the editorial content. Also, the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) and the National Council for Journalistic Ethics underline the importance of transparency as a fundamental principle for the protection of the public interest and media independence.
Even more worrying is the fact that among the first paid posts on Facebook of the newly created site is an aggressive attack against Ivelin Mihaylov. This targeted attack raises reasonable doubts that the site was created with one purpose: to be a weapon to defame those who are inconvenient for Delyan Peevski and the backstage that he symbolises.
The content of kompasnovini.com includes materials praising Delyan Peevski himself.
And the public has a right to know who is behind the fake websites set up for a single day, and for what purpose they are created. Precisely because of the lack of transparency and openness, signals are already being prepared by civil initiatives and independent organisations to the CEM, the Commission for Consumer Protection and other competent institutions that have the power to investigate and sanction such actions.
While the three-headed dragon of the backstage - Borisov, Peevski and Prokopiev - continues to contort reality and instil fear, Bulgarians should turn not to propaganda, but to those whose actions create a future and inspiration.
